Service excellence is a must

As we operate in one of the most demanding service environments in industry, our operations division has to meet the highest possible standards of service and efficiency.

Consider our twice a day delivery offering from our national network of highly automated service centres, add the fact that we are delivering medicine and see why we simply have to achieve excellence in all aspects of our role.

Our teams in the warehouses and on the fleet live and breathe this service excellence ethic, and although it is extremely demanding it is also exciting, rewarding and offers great opportunities for people who want to work in this arena.

Our Service Centre operations

At our 12 Service Centres located around the UK, each of our teams play an essential part in the supply chain:

Customer Services

Handling around 6300 calls per day, our Customer Services clerks are responsible for maintaining day to day contact with our customers, dealing with all customer queries from stock enquiries to order placement to credit information.

Inventory

The inventory teams have overall responsibility for the Service Centre stockholdings. A dedicated team maintains a perpetual inventory providing up to the minute stock valuations and accurate stock books.

Warehouse Operations

Our warehouse operatives pick around 2 million items every single day. Receiving goods from suppliers, the inbound teams are responsible for all product receipt, checking, storage and replenishment, whilst the outbound teams are responsible for picking, scanning and packaging of all customer orders ready to be loaded on to our fleet of 900 vehicles.

Transport

Our dedicated team of 1000 drivers are responsible for twice daily delivery to our customers throughout the UK. In all they make over 26000 deliveries every day to a regular customer base. Working on regular routes, our drivers build up good working relationships with our customers and are at the forefront of our Service ethic.

"It's always nice to be appreciated!"

I have been working for Alliance Healthcare since leaving school in 2005.

I first started in the warehouse as an operative, assembling orders, and then progressed to the Order Release section, which was a job I really enjoyed. In 2010 I moved into Customer Services where I was welcomed into the team. We are a great, hard-working team, and it’s a pleasure to work here.

In Customer Services I know how important the role is that everyone plays at Alliance Healthcare because I deal with the Pharmacists and Doctors who provide the ongoing care to patients.

I feel motivated to come to work every day to try and help customers, and it’s always nice to feel appreciated!

"We all pull together to get the job done, and that's why I love working with my team."

I joined Alliance Healthcare 4 years ago on the evening shift in the Production team, assembling orders. I'm now an Inventory Assistant and my job is to investigate discrepancies in our inventory and to maintain stock levels.

Working within my capacity at Alliance Healthcare, I often make deliveries to customers as and when necessary. Although this is not my main role, it is an area of the business that I have been privileged to be part of.

Last winter there was a shortage of flu vaccines and I was asked if I would take a delivery down to Wales, which I was happy to do - even though I gave up my New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to do it.

We all pull together to get the job done, and that's why I love working with my team.

"It's great to feel that we are doing something that makes a difference and helps to save people's lives."

When my son was just a baby I started working as a Warehouse Operative in the evenings. That was 24 years ago! As my son got older I have taken on more hours and worked my way up the ladder. I'm now a full time Team Leader and enjoy every minute of my job.

The people here are great; we all know each other really well and help each other. It's great to feel that we are doing something that makes a difference and helps to save people's lives.

"I got to know my customers really well - and they are absolutely brilliant!"

My first job with Alliance Healthcare was as a Porter, then after 18 months I became a driver, where I had the same route for 14 years. I got to know my customers really well - and they are absolutely brilliant!

My route changed recently which was a challenge as I had to make sure I still made the deliveries on time. But like all our drivers I know how important it is to get medicines and equipment to pharmacies and hospitals - even when the roads were disrupted by heavy snow for several days the vast majority of my customers still received their deliveries.

The other great thing about my job is the other lads I work with - I wouldn't swap them for anything!

"I enjoy my job because every day is different, and there are always opportunities to develop my skills."

I started working with Alliance Healthcare 9 years ago, as a part-time Warehouse Operative working evening shifts whilst studying Telecoms and Electrical Engineering. I was promoted to Team Leader and then after graduating I joined the company full time as an Automat Engineer.

My job is to maintain the whole warehouse automated system to ensure that we are able to fulfil our customer's orders without interruption. I deal with external contractors; deal with Network system issues, and work closely with the Service Desk to resolve any technical hitches.

I enjoy my job because every day is different, and there are always opportunities to develop my skills.

"I have had many opportunities to vary my career and work across the Group."

Initially I joined Alliance Healthcare (then UniChem) as a Roving Operations Manager. I was promoted within a year to Operations Manager at Letchworth which gave me a great insight to all areas of the Service Centre.

Then I was seconded for a year to Project Implementation Manager before being promoted to Senior Change Manager which gave me the opportunity to work with senior managers from the retail division. I later joined the Network Review Team which opened a new dimension of the business to me. I had the chance to work with a cross-functional team for the European Director of Logistics on designing a Distribution Network allowing Alliance Healthcare to maintain business continuity through a period of rapid volume growth.

Since the completion of the network review, I have been in my current role of National Business Analysis Manager, reporting to the Operations Director. I work very closely with all Service Centres and many functions in our Head Office in Chessington.

I have had many opportunities to vary my career and work across the Group. I have met a number of people at various levels of the organisation (from the shop floor to senior managers) whose passion and dedication for their job and the welfare of the company have inspired me to always give my best.
